Asymmetrical Lingerie

The use of asymmetry in lingerie design

The use of asymmetrical design in lingerie challenges the conventional notions of balance and harmony in characteristic of most fashion design. As a design element, asymmetry provides a sense of tension and unpredictability which evokes a sense of dynamism and energy. Asymmetry captures your attention creating visual interest and emphasis, drawing attention to specific elements within a design.

Asymmetry in lingerie design is somewhat of a rarity. possibly because it appeals to a more niche audience that are not afraid to defy convention. To find example of asymmetry we look to the experimental designs of students and statement pieces by avant garde brands.

Asymmetric corset

The asymmetry in this corset design by Penny Black - as part of her Contour Fashion BA final collection,- makes this both an underbust and overbust corset. The diagonal gap created between the corset and the one-sided bra strap evokes a sensual dynamism, as if the asymmetry of the design is showing us something we wouldn't normally be allowed to see.

Asymmetric panty

The asymmetry of this panty by Lethe Intimates draws you to the circular metal O ring and the suspender clasp at the side, suggestive of a tempting dynamic.
